Vinyl Vault - The Squad - Born In The Concrete
In 1984, Route 66, were recording in London at the studio and Claes Johansen invited me to the sessions to sing some back up harmonies. The studio, owned by Procol Harum's Matthew Fisher had such an incredible vibe, that we later used for September GurlsI. Claes, who later wrote the definitive Procol Harum biography Beyond The Pale, left me this single from his previous band, The Squad.
Released in 1980, the track opens with a Hammond organ—possibly a nod to Procol Harum—and blends mod energy with a Graham Parker vibe. The Squad was one of the very few punk/mod bands in Denmark at the time, making this a rare and unique release.
Trivia: The record is signed to John Beecher, who worked at Stage One and then established Castle Communications/Dojo- the label that re-issued the Mods Mayday album! Fun fact: Claes accidentally gave me the wrong copy while seeking a distributor!
